The Art of Fashion
About 2 weeks ago, I came across a flyer online that read “AURA student designer fashion show” hosted by Mount Mary’s very own fashion students. Honestly, I’m not all that familiar with their fashion program, so coming across this flyer immediately intrigued me. A few thoughts crossed my mind as I read it. To be frank, I’ve never been to a student designer fashion show hosted at one’s school. For that reason alone, I was a bit ambivalent about purchasing a ticket. I didn’t know what to fully expect from the show, but that almost premature decision to snag a seat or not was short-lived. Now, me being hesitant about attending was nothing negative at all. See the thing is, a couple of people were discussing whether a fashion show at a university would have the same attributes as a show held at another location. I guess they were in search for something they deemed would give a more “polished” feel to it? Although that could make sense, their opinions on this topic made me even more interested in going. In fact, that’s when I made my final decision and purchased two tickets for my sister and I. At that point, I let all my thoughts subside so that the show could do all the thinking for me.
May 10th came around, I quickly threw my zebra printed clogs off in the parking lot and joyfully slid my feet into my 4-inch mules. At 4:51pm, we exited the car to attend the 5pm show and with every step I took, more excitement filled my body. We were greeted with warming smiles as we walked up the last step, scanned our tickets, and swiftly made our way inside to be seated. Let me start by saying that the students who were responsible for the set-up and direction of the show did such an impeccable job! From the seating arrangements, to the color scheme, down to every minute detail. I opened the pamphlet we grabbed and noticed that everything was broken down into categories.
Allure
Divine
Rebirth
Ethereal
Mesmeric
Allure, living up to its name, gave us some very powerful, captivating looks.
Divine gave us a touch of goddess, the fabric and styling were graceful while also being daring!
Rebirth showed us that we can take anything old and give it a fresh new look! The up-cycling was amazing.
Ethereal was wonderfully playful, with shades of pinks and blues, decorated with beautiful bows.
Mesmeric took us on a unique ride. From the earthly themes to the breathtaking silhouettes, outstanding.
This is the future of fashion. There is absolutely nothing more refreshing than seeing art in its purest form.
When it trickles down from the imagination into the heart and out into the physical, that is when it is in its purest form. I’m happy that the student designers decided to share their art with us, because being creative can come with a very chatty mind. We tend to get in our heads a bit when it comes down to creating from our imagination and pulling it straight into reality. Mainly, what other people would say, feel, and think about your art or even about you. I get it, it’s personal. It’s private, we can be sensitive about our art because it stems directly from us. Oftentimes, when people reject your art, it can feel like a rejection of you. Don’t let that be the case though!
One thing I love about art is the fact that you don’t have to share it with the world. Something I always tell creative people is that they should never put too much pressure on themselves when it comes to producing their art. You don’t have to share anything you create with anyone and I find that the most beautiful. Share your art because you enjoy it and would like people to enjoy it with you. You shouldn’t create from the minds of others, only from your own. That in itself will attract those who are grateful that you allowed them to get a peak inside your mind, creating infinite inspiration. After all, “An artist can show things that other people are terrified of expressing”. -Louise Bourgeois
Side note: Someone please remind me to stop wearing black all the time!

Stop and Smell the Roses
“appreciation of circumstances, loved ones, and enemies around you. Recognizing the role they significantly played in your life, and how that domino effect brought you to where you stand today.. are you standing with your head held high, or is your head swinging awfully low?”
Stop and Smell the Roses.. that’s what that means to me.
When did I realize I needed to stop and smell the roses, you ask? Well, you’ll find that out along the way.
Often we forget to slow down and catch a breath, we forget to exhale after anxiously inhaling all of our worries and deepest sorrows.
With the cold season approaching, I think it’s time to sit down and give yourself a LOT of tlc. Go ahead, you deserve it.
Now that you have shown kindness to yourself, I want to ask you… what’s your definition of Stop and Smell the Roses? What does it truly mean to you? Everything tends to have different meanings for everyone, for example: success, failure, love, being wealthy, being poor, having a career, etc. means something different to each and every one of you! It’s perfectly fine if you have no definition at all. As a brand-spanking new 20-year-old, I also have no definition of certain words/phrases. Such as working hard.
I have zero clue what working hard means to me! Like at all! I’m actually envious of those who bring up working hard for what they have, I truly have never felt like I’ve worked hard for something. That’s not saying I don’t DESERVE anything I have and opportunities that are given to me, it just means… well exactly what I said, I have zero clue.
But hey, that’s what your 20s are for, right? Finding out what works for you and what doesn’t? See, everyone has it in their head that living starts when you’re born, when really, it starts when you decide to live your life and not act out of survival mode! But there I go again.. there goes another one, another topic that everyone has their own definition of.
Short and bittersweet, I swear it’s just the beginning and you will be hearing more from me. I hope to share my 20s with you and maybe guide you along your path as well. I can’t wait to tell you all about the traveling, the dating, the ups, the downs, what’s in and what’s out!
